Weekly topic

Let’s talk about traditional Japanese culture.

Vinay’s opinion

I’m a big fan of traditional Japanese taiko drums, or wadaiko.

Actually, I was in a taiko drum group when I lived in Iwate.

In taiko drumming, the form and movement of the body, or kata, is just as important as the sound of the drums.

I was surprised to learn that.

If you watch a taiko drum performance, you can be amazed by the dramatic movements of the players and the exciting rhythms of the drums.

And playing is even more fun.

Ananda’s opinion

I love onsen, or hot springs, and sento.

In Japan, people didn’t always have private baths, so public bathing became part of the culture.

Onsen are often found in beautiful natural areas where you can enjoy a whole experience of staying at a ryokan, a traditional style inn, and eating local foods.
Hot springs are great for health and relaxation.
There are many types of baths, like large outdoor baths and baths with minerals.
Oh, and don’t forget to wear a yukata when you get out.
