レッスンのポイント 今回は過去の「遠く離れた」と現在完了形の「追ってくるイメージを基に、その使い分けを考えてみましょう。

Nico: Welcome back, sis. How was your trip?
Cheryl: Wonderful. I’ll tell you about it on the way home.
Nico: I’m looking forward to hearing all your stories.
Cheryl: Thanks a lot for coming to pick me up.
Nico: Hey, what are big brothers for? Let’s get going.
Cheryl: I’ll let you handle the big suitcase.
Nico: No problem. Er… where have I parked my car? Airport parking garages are so confusing.
Cheryl: You don’t remember the space number? Unbelievable! I should have taken the train!

キーセンテンスの現在完了形は「今に迫ってくる」形。話し手は過去に車を止めたその出来事を今に引きつけています―「車は今どこにあるのだろう」。
一方、過去形を使えば、あくまで思考は過去の出来事の上に漂っています―「（あのとき）車をどこに止めたのだろう」。
