Lesson 049 視点の相違 : leave
レッスンのポイント leave には「出発する」「残す」と、一見無関係な意味が同居しています。同じ動作を異なる視点から見ることによって２つの意味が生じているのです。
Today’s dialog
仕事中に父親からの電話を受けたジェニー。
Jenny: Hell, Dad? Why are you calling me at work?
Dad: Jenny, did you check your pockets before you left the house this morning?
Jenny: No, why?
Dad: You left your keys on the table.
Jenny: Oh, did I?
Dad: Mom and I are going to eat out tonight, so I will bring your keys after work. Can we meet at the station at 6 o’clock?
Jenny: Well, I’m not sure I can leave work that early.

①be going to と will の区別、bring の方向性
Mom and I are going to eat out tonight, so I will bring your keys after work. Can we meet at the station at 6 o’clock?
また be going to と will が出てきました。be going to は「流れ」。be going to を直訳すれば「進んでいるところ」。流れに乗って to 以下に向かっている最中なんです。この文の Mom and I are going to eat out は「外食するつもり」- すでに決定しておりそこに向けて進んでいるということ。
一方will は「意思（～するよ）」。心積もりがあらかじめあったわけでは無く、その場で決定しています。
この文のもうひとつのポイントは bring。ここで父親がbring を選んでいるのは、自分の位置ではな発言しているから。

leave（出発する・去る）が「（置き）忘れる」という意味で使われています。leave のこの意味はたいへんポピュラー。
Why did you leave your job?
一方、離れた結果「残されたモノ」に注目すると「残す・置き忘れる・置き去りにする」といったニュアンスになります。
May I leave a message?
I left the door unlocked.
「残す」はもちろん「（残したまま）放っておく」にもつながります。
次の文はどんな意味でしょう？
クリスがパーティーから帰った後には何も残っていなかった。全部食べちゃったんですね。

「出発する・去る」leave の基本的な使い方。
I left you the shopping list on the kitchen table.
leave も「授与型」で使えば「あげる・くれる」が感じられます。「あなたに買い物リストを残しておいた」ということ。
I told you to leave the cat alone.
「放っておく」の leave。「the cat を alone（ひとりっきり）の状態で放っておく」ということ。leave … alone「～を（邪魔しないで）放っておく・かまわない」はまとめて覚えましょう。
