Lesson 099

ピーコック教授の講演のあと、レベッカが教授について質問をします。

Regretfully, we’re running out of time, so I’ll take just a couple of questions from the audience. Yes, the lady with her hand up in the front row.
Thank you for that amazing lecture, Professor Peacock. My name is Rebecca, and I’m a huge fan of your books.
Thank you very much, Rebecca.
What is your next book going to be about?
Ah, you’ll have to read it to find out!

Lesson 126

ジェシカはピーコック教授が大きなスーツケースを持っているのを見て呼び止めます。

Hi, Professor Peacock! That’s a big suitcase. Are you going overseas again?
Oh, hi, Jessica. Yes, I’m going to Egypt to do some scuba diving.
Scuba diving in Egypt? Why don’t you go to Hawaii or Mexico?
It’s for my research. I’m not going for pleasure. Some ancient statues have been discovered at the bottom of the River Nile.
Oh, please take a lot of good pictures!
I’ll try. I just bought a new underwater camera.
Well, have a good time in Egypt, Professor. I guess you want to go into the Great Pyramid again.
Yes, I’m looking forward to doing that, too.

Lesson 151

エジプトから帰ってきたピーコック教授にジェシカが旅の様子を尋ねています。

Professor Peacock! How was your trip to Egypt?

It was absolutely fantastic. I also traveled to the city of Jericho.

Oh, Jericho! It’s mentioned in the Bible. I didn’t know that it still existed.

Yes, Jericho is said to be the oldest city in the world. The history of the place goes back at least 11,000 years.

Wow, I had no idea! Did you take lots of pictures?

Yes, I think I have enough photos and material for my next book.

I’m really looking forward to reading it, Professor. You’re such a great writer.

Well, thank you very much, Jessica. I’ll try not to disappoint you.

Lesson 193

ピーコック教授にミサキが質問しています。

OK, that ends our lecture today. Remember, students, to read chapter 10 of the textbook before the next lecture.

Professor Peacock, May I ask you a question about the lecture?

Of course, Misaki.

Thank you. You said that human beings are unique because we use fire.

Yes, that’s right. Humans are the only animals that use fire.

Well, do you think that fire is necessary to have a civilization?

That’s a very good question, Misaki. It depends on what you mean by “civilization.” But having control of fire was certainly a turning point in human evolution.
