Kota arrives at Sydney Airport. His host father, Max, meets him there.

Kota: Mr. Miller?

Max: That’s right. You are Kota, aren’t you?

Kota: Yes!

Max: You can call me Max. It’s great to finally meet you!

Kota: Pleased to meet you, Max.

Max: オーストラリアへようこそ!

Kota: Oh, you speak Japanese?!

Max: Haha, just a little. At my job, I sometimes work with Japanese companies.

Kota: Oh, you do?

Max: I’ll take your bags.

Kota: Thanks.

Max: Come this way. Let’s go to the car.

Kota arrives at the Miller family home. His host mother and sister welcome him.

Michelle: Kota, welcome to our home! I’m Michelle.

Angie: I’m Angie!

Kota: Nice to meet you. Thank you so much for hosting me.

Michelle: It’s our pleasure!

Angie: Don’t you have jet lag?

Kota: No, I don’t. Actually the time difference between Japan and Sydney is only one hour.

Angie: Oh, I didn’t know that!

Kota: But it was a long flight.

Michelle: Aren’t you hungry?

Kota: Um… yes, I am!

Michelle: Great, it’s almost dinnertime!

Kota’s host family, the Millers, have a welcome dinner for him.

Angie: Try this, Kota. Mum’s Chinese hot and sour soup is the best!

Kota: Mmm, it’s really good!

Michelle: Thanks.

Max: But you also have to try a traditional Aussie dish… the meat pie!

Kota: What is a meat pie?

Max: Try it!

Kota: It’s salty. But delicious! It has some kind of sauce….

Max: That’s gravy.

Angie: Did you make them, Dad?

Max: Actually… I bought them from the store….

Everyone: Hahaha!

After dinner, Angie and Kota are talking in the living room. Kota sees watercolor paintings of koalas on the wall.

Kota: Who painted those koalas?

Angie: I did. I love animals.

Kota: So do I! There are so many interesting animals in Australia, aren’t there?

Angie: Definitely! You will see a lot during your stay here.

Kota: I can’t wait!

Angie: Tomorrow I’ll show you around Sydney.

Kota: Great!

Angie: Get some rest. I’ll wake you up tomorrow morning. But not too early. I’m not an early riser.

Kota: Neither am I….
