レッスンのポイント 今回は「感嘆文」。基本配置を崩し前置することに「感嘆」が宿ります。

デビットがフィルム式のカメラを持っているのを見て、テイラーが話しかけます。
Taylor: What a nice camera you have! Is that a film camera?
David: Yes, I got it from my father, who got it from his father.
Taylor: So it must be very old.
David: It’s over 50 years old, but it still takes great pictures, and it’s a lot of fun to use.
Taylor: What kind of pictures do you take?
David: Have you heard of street photography?
Taylor: No. What’s that?
David: It’s taking pictures of people and things you see on the street.
Taylor: Oh, so I guess you have to be careful since some people don’t like to have their pictures taken without permission.
David: That’s right.

大きな感嘆のキモチを伝える「感嘆文」と呼ばれる形です。「What＋名詞＋主語＋動詞！」の語順となっていることに注意しましょう。この形は本質的に「前置」の形。基本語順を崩し感動の焦点である a nice camera を前に置くことによって感嘆を表しています。what を使わなくても前置だけで感嘆の意味を伝えることも可能です。
A nice camera you’ve got there!
いいカメラ持ってるねえ！
キーセンテンスは「名詞」に感嘆する what が使われていますが、「美しい」など形容詞に感嘆する場合、あるいは「楽々と」など副詞に感嘆する場合には、「程度」を示す how を用います。
How beautiful she is!

感動の焦点が名詞 a performance（演技）。「What +名詞+主語+動詞！」の語順です。
How unbelievable that card trick is!
感動の焦点が形容詞 unbelievable（信じ難い）。「How +形容詞+主語+動詞！」の語順です。
How perfectly she skated! She deserves to be the champion.
感動の焦点が副詞 perfectly（完璧に）。「How +副詞+主語+動詞！」の語順です。deserve は覚える価値のある動詞。「～の価値がある・～にふさわしい・～するのも当然だ」ということです。
