レッスンのポイント 前回の would に引き続き、今回は could、might を使ってみましょう。

週末にも外出しないジェフをカナが高尾山に誘いますが･･･。
Kana: How was your weekend, Jeff?
Jeff: Fine, I suppose. I just stayed at home.
Kana: Why don’t you venture out and see a bit more of Japan?
Jeff: I want to, but I don’t have a car. If I had a car, I could go to many places.
Kana: You don’t need a car. Just use public transportation.
Jeff: I guess I could do that. Can you recommend any good places?
Kana: Well… Next weekend, I’m going to Mt. Takao with some of my friends. Would you like to come with us?
Jeff: Next weekend? I’d love to, but I have to work.
Kana: You work too much, Jeff.
Jeff: I know, but I love my job.

Why don’t you …? は「～してはどう？」と勧誘・提案を表すフレーズでしたね。venture out は「思い切って出かける」。venyure（思い切ってする）は重要動詞。

If I had a car, I could go to many places.
if 節を用いた仮定法の文。この文はまず、現在の内容について if 節で過去形を使っています。これで反事実（〈実際に持ってはいないけど〉もし持っていたら）となります。今回は would ではなく、could でホンワカ結びましょう。could は can の控えめバージョン。can の持つ「できるよ！」という断言から、「できるんじゃないかなぁ」と弱く、退いたニュアンスとなっています。
もうひとつ同じような例を。
If I had more time, I could explain things more clearly.
今度は might でホンワカ結んでいきましょう。
If you played your cards right, you might persuade Mariko to go out with you.
may（～かもしれない）を過去形 might に。

could、might を使って、反事実の想定をホンワカ結んでいきましょう。
If you were fit enough, you could try climbing Mt. Fuji.
fit は単に healthy（健康な）、病気ではないということではありません。運動を行うなどして健康で元気な状態です。「try + -ing」は「（試しに）～してみる」。
If you tried Chris’s cooking, you might end up in the hospital!
「もしそうした事態になってしまったら」ということ。might は「かもしれない」。end up ～ は「結局（最後に）～ということになる」。
If I didn’t have to work this weekend, I could go to Kyoto with you guys.
「実際は仕事があって行けない」というニュアンスですね。バックシフトして「ありえない」。could（～できるだろうか）でホンワカ。you guys と guys がつくことによって、複数の you であることがしっかり伝わります。
