まだ幼いシンディがテレビショッピングでスニーカーを注文しようとしていたと、母親から聞いた父親はびっくり。
Mom: Honey, did you know that Cindy called “TV Market Now”?
Dad: Who did you say Cindy called?
Mom: “TV Market Now,” the home shopping TV channel. She wanted to order some sneakers.
Dad: WHAT? I can’t believe she did that without our permission. Where is she now?
Mom: Calm down. She wasn’t actually able to buy them because the operator sensed that Cindy was just a little girl. He told her to ask her parents first.
Dad: Well, that’s very good of the operator to do that.But we should still have words with Cindy to make sure she never does it again.

have words with は word が複数形になっていることに注意。口論したり・叱ったり、何度も言葉を交わすから。have a word なら「ちょっと話をする（短く会話する）」です。to 不定詞は目的（～するために）。make sure … は「～を確実にする」。

複雑な wh 疑問文の仕上げです。空所への感度を上げていきましょう。この文の空所の位置・文の意味は分かりますか？ say の内容を説明する節で call の目的語が欠けています。
Who did you say called Cindy?
こちらは call の主語が欠けているため、「誰がシンディに電話をかけたと言いましたか？」となります。
さあここで問題。次のペアの意味の違いを瞬時に理解することができるでしょうか？
Who did you say Becky met at the supermarket?
Who did you say met Becky at the supermarket?
①は met の目的語位置が空所、②は met の主語位置が空所、それぞれ「誰に会った」「誰が会った」という意味関係になります。
ここまでできれば wh 疑問文は卒業。相当複雑な疑問文も自由に作れるはず。

fancy は「気に入る・ほしい」を意味するイギリス英語。この動詞の後ろ、目的語の位置を尋ねています。
