レッスンのポイント 今回は難易度を表す形容詞が作る、空所を使った文の形を学びましょう。

ガールフレンドのアユの父親に会いに来たショーンですが、とても緊張して･･･。
Sean: Oh, do we have to do this?
Ayu: What’s the problem? My father has been waiting to see you for ages, but you keep putting the meeting off.
Sean: Well, you told me your father is really hard to please. That’s why I’m so nervous.
Ayu: Where has your usual confidence gone? Look, I’ve already told him how wonderful you are. I’m sure you’ll get along very well with him.
Sean: OK. You’re right. Let’s do it.
Ayu: That’s the spirit.

Your father is really hard to please.
please は「～を喜ばせる」という意味。とすると、please の目的語位置にはあるべき要素がない、つまりここが空所になっているのです。実は、please の後ろの空所は主語 your father と組み合わされ、please your father（君のお父さんを喜ばせる）という意味関係を結んでいます。文全体としては「君のお父さんを喜ばせるのは難しい」という意味となっているのです。
