「見る」を表すレベル２動詞、eye が出てきました。この動詞のイメージは「湿度の高い、じっとりした目線」です。eye の後ろには、値踏みしたり不信感を持っていたりなど、対象に探りを入れる心理が働いているのです。
She gazed at him thinking – this is the man for me.
You shouldn’t stare at people. It’s bad manners.
gaze は「ステキだなぁ。見ていたいなぁ」というニュアンス。
stare はカッと目を見開きながら。好奇心に駆られていたり、相手を威嚇しようと思っていたり。かなり失礼な視線の送り方。
She only glanced at her cheat sheet, but the teacher caught her.

次の2つはどちらも「チラッと見た」ですが
glance は「時間の短さに焦点があり
glimpse は「（チラッと見ただけで）よくは見ていない」に焦点があります。
