Misato: I love this view! This is my first time at a rooftop beer garden.
Landon: Really? I come here every summer.
Misato: It’s too bad Hiroki couldn’t come. He said he’s busy with work.
Landon: He’s changed a lot since he joined our company. He’s gaining more and more confidence.
Misato: I know. He’s always trying to acquire new skills.
Landon: He needs to relax sometimes too, though. All work and no play…
Misato: …makes Hiroki a dull boy?
Landon: Exactly.

gain は「手に入れる・獲得する」と訳されますが、get とはニュアンスが異なり、消しゴムのようにポンと手に入るものに gain を使うことはできません。gain は「徐々にジワジワ」と範囲を広げるように手に入れます。
I gained weight.
She has acquired enough skill to be able to work independently now.
acquire（獲得する）も簡単に手に入るものには使いません。能力やスキル、名声など価値あるものを獲得すること。そこに重みがあり、この重みが「長時間のプロセスを経て」のニュアンスにつながることもしばしばあります。
Whiskey is an acquired taste.
最後は obtain（取得する）。このニュアンスの中心は「カタくフォーマル」。公共機関で使われることも多く、また入手までの努力に焦点があります。
