レッスンのポイント 「レベル２動詞」とは、基本動詞ほど汎用性はないものの、繊細で豊かなニュアンスを持つ動詞のこと。所有を表す possess、belong、own を紹介しましょう。

中小企業の経営者オガワに、ビジネス誌編集者のレイシーがインタビューをしています。
Lacey: Thank you for taking time for this interview.
Ogawa: My pleasure. I love your business magazine.
Lacey: Thank you. Sorry, I couldn’t help noticing. That’s a nice watch.
Ogawa: It was my father’s . My father left me everything he possessed, including this company.
Lacey: So, you’re the second president?
Ogawa: That’s right. My father founded this company in 1967.
Lacey: What do you feel is the secret of your company’s success?
Ogawa: My father’s philosophy. He always said, “Put the customers first.”

Thank you for の形。しっかり使えますか？前置詞の後ろに動詞句内容（～すること）を持ってくるときには、動詞 -ing形をお使いください。
②複雑な wh 疑問文
What do you feel is the secret of your company’s success?
複雑な wh 疑問文です。文全体は「you feel(あなたは感じる）」に、その内容を説明する節が後続する「リポート文」の形ですが、節の中の動詞 is には主語がありません。what はここを尋ねており「何があなたの会社の成功の秘訣であると感じますか」という疑問文になっています。

My father left me everything he possessed.
possess は、「所有している・持っている」と訳される have と似通った動詞ですが、possess は「（大切なもの・非合法のもの・才能などを）持っている」ニュアンス。この場合は「大切なもの」で、そのイメージは「しっかりと抱きかかえている」。そのイメージが次のような面白い使い方にもつながります。
He attacked me like a man possessed.
悪魔や幽霊が「取り憑く」様子が possess のイメージに重なるのです。
所有系動詞には、ほかに belong（～に属する）があります。
This watch belongs to me.(この時計は私のです。）などと使いますがそのイメージは「ピッタリくる場所」。
I don’t belong here.
I own this restaurant.
最後は own(所有する）。

I’m not sure if she possesses the right qualifications for this job.
qualifications は「資格・能力・資質」。大切なモノですから possesses がピッタリ。
I just found out that Helen and I belong to the same sports club.
find out は「見つけ出す・知る」。belong to は「～にピッタリする場所がある＝所属している」。
That guy owns a chain of sushi restaurant. He’s mega-rich!
