Today’s dialog

歌舞伎を見に来ているバーニーとマリコが、昼食について相談しています。

Bernie: Mariko, do you know when the kabuki show starts?

Mariko: Let me check. Yes, it starts at 11 a.m.

Bernie: Oh, right. So, what shall we do for lunch?

Mariko: I bought these makunouchi bentos for us while I was waiting for you. We can eat them during the intermission.

Bernie: Thanks a lot. You’re very well organized. But tell me, what exactly does makunouchi mean?

Mariko: I think it means “between the acts.”

Bernie: Oh, that’s interesting. The problem is, I’m hungry already!
