Lesson 211 見つけた、ぼくの夢

It’s Kota’s last day at Hoggett High School. He is giving a farewell speech to his class.
Kota
My year in Australia is nearly over. I’ve had so many precious experiences in my time here.

I’ll never forget our trip to the Outback and the sunrise above Uluru. Performing in the school musical was so much fun!

If I had more time here, I could make more memories with you. But the most important part is the things I’ve learned about myself.

I’ve discovered a new passion here-surfing. And I plan to continue doing it with all my heart. Please visit me in Japan anytime. You’ll always be welcome!
Thank you all for everything!

Lesson 212 すごく好きなんだ

The Millers are hosting a farewell party for Kota.
Michelle: Has it really been a year since you first came here, Kota?

Kota: Yeah, time flies.

Max: We’ve prepared a treat for you because you’re leaving.

Kota: Lamingtons! My favorite Australian sweets! They will be hard to find in Japan. I love the combination of sponge cake, chocolate sauce, and coconut.

Sapna: Oh, they’re not well-known in Japan?

Nigel: They’re mainly popular in Australia and New Zealand.

Sapna: If I were you, I would open an Australian pastry shop in Japan. I’m sure lamingtons would be popular there!

Kota: I can make onigiris, but I’m not good at baking!

Kota: Thank you so much for all your kindness this past year.

Angie: It was so nice having you, Kota. Here, I have something for you.

Kota: Oh, wow! It’s a watercolor painting of us with the koalas. Did you paint this?

Angie: Yeah.

Kota: It’s really good! I’ll put it on my wall in Japan. And Nigel, Sapna, and Briony, I don’t want to say goodbye to you guys!

Sapna: We’ll miss you so much, Kota! Won’t we, Briony?

Briony: Oh, yeah… we’ll miss you!

Nigel: Kota, come on!

Kota: Um, Briony, would you mind if I talked to you outside?

Retelling

Lesson 214 君はどうなの?

Kota is talking to Briony in the Millers’ backyard.
Kota: You’ve been very quiet tonight, Briony.

Briony: I have? I guess I’m sad.

Kota: Me, too.

Briony: We’ve become good friends.

Kota: I think you’re amazing. You didn’t quit even though you struggled with your injury. And you won!

Briony: Your advice gave me the confidence to try the 360 spin.

Kota: No, it was thanks to your fighting spirit. I admire you. And I really care for you.

Briony: Oh, Kota.

Kota: You don’t… feel the same way… about me?

Briony: But you’re leaving. We can’t be together.

Kota: I wonder if you could visit me in Japan.

Briony: I don’t know. It’s so far away.
