Lesson 201 突破できるか・・・?

Kota has just finished his last run in the semifinal round of the boys’ surfing competition. Everyone waits for the judges’ scores.

Story

Kota had a nice, long run with lots of turns.
He almost fell off his board once.
But he kept steady. That’s important. He needs at least 8.6 points to move on to the finals.
This is so stressful!
The five judges are about to give their scores out of ten. This is the score that will decide Kota’s fate!

An eight, a nine, another nine, and eight, and… another eight. We take away the highest score and the lowest score. That makes an average score of 8.3 points!
Oh, so close! Kota won’t move on to the finals, after all.

Lesson 202 ブライオニー、輝く

Briony is in the finals of the girls’ surfing competition. She is getting ready for her last run.

Story

This is the final run for Briony McAffee. To beat her opponent, she needs 9 points or more. And she’s up! She does some nice turns. And she goes into a beautiful cutback.
What’s that?
She just turned around against the direction of the wave. That’s a cutback.
She’s coming to the end of the wave. No, wait! She’s going for one more trick! Up to the top…. And she does a perfect 360 spin! Wow!
Fantastic, Briony!
That last trick that she did was amazing!
The judges scores are… three nines and two tens, for an average of 9.3 points! Briony McAffee wins first place!

Lesson 203 ベストをつくした・・・!

After the competition, everyone gathers to congratulate Briony and Kota.

Story

Congratulations!
You did it! You finally won the championship!
Thank you, everyone! I was able to win thanks to all your support.
I can’t believe you did the 360 spin! What a victory!
I’m so happy for you!
You did so well, too!
I tried my best. I only came in fourth place, though.
But your last run was magnificent!
Yeah, you went for so long. Have you done that before?
No, I think that was my longest run ever!
You have a lot to be proud of.
I guess so!

Lesson 204 スコットの励まし

After the competition, Kota finds Scott Wailani and talks to him.

Story

Hi, Scott?
You’re Kota, the kid from Japan, right? Awesome job today!
Thanks. You’ve been a real inspiration to me.
Wait, haven’t we met before?
Yes, at your surfing exhibition last September.
That’s right! Did you enjoy the competition?
Yes. I felt great when I completed those turns!
Well, that’s incredible! A person who enjoys challenges can do anything.
I know that now. I’m going back to Japan soon. I hope I can continue surfing.
You must! You have real talent. Don’t waste it!
