Lesson 146 ツリーを飾ろう

The Millers and Kota are decorating their Christmas tree at home.

Story

Is it your first time decorating a Christmas tree, Kota?
No. I have decorated a Christmas tree many times. We have one in our house in Japan. But our tree is tiny, about one meter tall. Your tree is twice as tall as our tree!
The decorations are in these boxes.
Look at this ornament. On your tree, kangaroos are pulling Santa’s sleigh, not reindeer!
Yeah, it’s very Aussie. After decorating the tree, we can put presents under it.
Oh, you put the presents under the tree?
Yes. Then we open them all on Christmas morning!

Lesson 147 ギプスが取れたら・・・

Kota and Briony are talking before class.

Story

I have some good news. The doctor said that my cast could come off in one week.
That’s wonderful! What do you want to do after that?
I want to do so many things. I want to surf. I want to swim. I want to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef!
Wow!
Have you ever seen wild sea turtles?
No, I haven’t.
You can see lots of them in the Great Barrier Reef. In summer, they lay their eggs on the beaches.
That sounds amazing!

Lesson 148 ぼくの家族だよ

Kota, Briony, Sapna, and Nigel are chatting during break at school.

Story

My family sent me some recent pictures from Iwate. I have them on my tablet.
Ooh, show us!
This is my family in front of our house.
What are they doing in the picture?
They’re shoveling snow.
That’s right. In Iwate, it snows from November to March or sometimes April. Last week, it snowed 30 centimeters in one day!
I have never seen so much snow.
Someday you should all come visit me in Iwate. We can go snowboarding together.
Um, I think I’ll just soak in the hot springs instead.

Lesson 149 大みそかのお楽しみ

Kota, Briony, Sapna, and Nigel are walking down the street after school.

Story

Next week is our final week in Year 8!
I can’t believe it.
New Year’s is just around the corner.
Oh yeah! I’m going to the New Year’s Eve fireworks.
You’ll have a great time. They are spectacular!
Sometimes more than a million people gather to watch them.
Wow. I have been to fireworks festivals in Iwate. They are often held in August. Sometimes people wear traditional summer clothes, such as yukata or jinbei.
I think this will be a different experience. There’s a countdown and fireworks at midnight.
