Kota and his classmates are on a field trip to the Outback.

Nigel: What a long journey!

Sapna: Yeah, but we’re finally here. It’s my first time in the Outback!

Kota: It’s like a desert! And the land is so red.

Nigel: Yes, the Outback is big and dry. And you can see traditional Aboriginal life here.

Kota: We’re very far from any big city, aren’t we?

Nigel: Yes, we’re almost in the center of Australia.

Mr. Bennett: OK, students, this is Tommy. He’ll be our guide here. He’ll teach us about Aboriginal culture.

Tommy: Welcome to the Outback!

Tommy is telling the students about Aboriginal culture.

Tommy: Today, we’ll learn about a famous Aboriginal hunting weapon. What is it, everyone?

All students: The boomerang!

Tommy: That’s right.

Briony: You know boomerangs, Kota?

Kota: Yes, we know them in Japan. I made a paper boomerang when I was little. I know that they were weapons.

Tommy: Here is a traditional wooden boomerang. Originally, Aboriginal people used them to hunt animals. For example, birds and other small animals.

Sapna: The decorations on it are gorgeous!

Tommy: Who wants to try throwing one?

In a large field, the students take turns throwing a soft, plastic boomerang.

Nigel: I couldn’t throw the boomerang properly.

Kota: Neither could I. My boomerang didn’t come back.

Nigel: We all failed. It’s impossible.

Briony: Uh, I’ll try!

Nigel: OK, here’s the boomerang.

Briony: Thanks. Ungh!

Kota: Wow, it’s coming back!

Briony: Hah!

Kota: Briony, you threw it beautifully and caught it! That was amazing!

Nigel: How did you do that?

Briony: When you throw it, bend your wrist quickly. Here, I’ll show you my technique.

Kota: Thanks!

After the performance of Aboriginal music and dance. The students, Mr. Bennett, and Tommy, the tour guide, talk about it.

Mr. Bennett: Thank you for that wonderful music and dance performance!

Tommy: Thank you for watching and listening.

Kota: The didgeridoos sounded cool all together.

Nigel: And the rhythm was exciting.

Tommy: I’m glad you enjoyed it. The last song was about the Earth’s creation. Those songs tell stories of Aboriginal history and culture. It’s important to carry on Aboriginal traditions.

Mr. Bennett: Their performances show us that Aboriginal music is special.

Anya: Look, my friend gave me this beautiful flower.

You: What a beautiful flower!
