Lesson 198 非制限用法（コンマで情報を追加する）
レッスンのポイント 関係代名詞・関係副詞による修飾では、コンマ（発音上では休止）を置く場合がありますが、コンマを置かない通常の場合と意味合いが異なることに注意しましょう。

Cedric: Claudia, welcome back. So, how was your business trip to Hong Kong this time?
Claudia: It was simply fantastic. Everything went really well.
Cedric: How was the hotel?
Claudia: The service was amazing as usual. Barbara Chang, who is the hotel manager , greeted us personally. She always makes us feel welcome.
Cedric: By the way, did you go up Victoria Peak?
Claudia: Yes, we did, but it was so foggy that we couldn’t see the city below.
Cedric: Oh, that’s too bad. Maybe you can go again.
Claudia: I’ll definitely go back for the next sales meeting this spring.

go は出来事が「進む」に使われます。丸ごと覚えましょう。
It was so foggy that we couldn’t see the city below.
so … that ～（たいへん･･･なので～だ）の形。so にそのイメージ「矢印」を感じてください。「とても霧が深かった→見ることができなかった」という流れ。

この文では、関係代名詞節が発音上の休止（書き言葉ではコンマ）によって区切られています。この形は今までの使い方と大きく気分が違います。「エクストラな情報をねじ込む」―それがこの形の気分。先行詞に「ところでね、ちなみに～だけど」と追加情報を盛り込むときに使います。「バーバラ・チャンは、その人ホテルの支配人なんだけどさ、直接出迎えてくれたんだよ」という呼吸。名詞を並べて説明する「同格」と同じ呼吸ですよ。
さて、追加情報を盛り込むこの形は、コンマなしの今までの関係詞節と本質的にことなります。

コンマなしの場合、話し手は、先行詞がどんな人・モノなのかを「絞り込む」ために説明を加えています。I know a girl ではどんな少女かわからないため、who wahts be an astronaut と絞り込んでいるのです。
キーセンテンスでは Barbara Chang で十分誰のことか伝わります。伝わった上で、追加の情報を盛り込む、それがコンマのついた関係詞修飾の気分なのです。
この形は皆さんが学んだ wh 語のほとんどで使うことができます。

今度は where でつなぎましょう。先行詞 Easter Island は the famous Moai statues are on Easter Island.と場所を示すフレーズ、副詞として働いています。
