レッスンのポイント 「関係代名詞節」とは、関係代名詞 who which that 関係副詞 where when why などを使った節による修飾です。名詞を節で修飾する重要なテクニックですが、苦手意識を持つ学習者がとても多い文法事項でもあります。しかし、この修飾の本質が「空所」にあることを理解すれば簡単に乗り越えていくことができます。

この文は初めて会った人に問いかけるときによく使われます。丸ごと覚えましょう。

主語の The guy making the coffee の並びに注目。The guy の後ろに making the coffee が置かれその説明となっています。kind of は「ちょっと」。断定を避けるために使われています。weird は「変な・奇妙な」。よく使われる単語です。

今回は関係代名詞節による修飾の基本を学びます。
「名詞を、後ろに置いた節で説明する形」です。修飾される名詞を特に「先行詞」と呼ぶことにしましょう。
この文では先行詞 the guy（その男性）の後ろに you were talking to（あなたが話していた）という節が置かれ「あなたが話していた男性」と修飾が行われています。
ほかの修飾と違うのは説明の節に「空所」がある点。（通常はtalking to himなどとなる）
先行詞と節の「空所」による「組み合わせ修飾」。
次の例の「名詞を、後ろに置いた語句で説明する形」とまるで変わらないのです。

コーヒーをいれているあの男性はちょっと変です。
I heard a rumor that Risa is moving to Osaka.
リサが大阪に引っ越すつもりだという噂を聞きました。
the guy を making the coffee で説明して「コーヒーをいれている男性」、rumor をフルセンテンスで説明して「リサが大阪に引っ越すつもりだという噂」となっています。

The book you recommended is really interesting.
先行詞 the book を you recommended で説明しています。recommended （～を薦めてくれた）の目的語が空所。the book とこの空所が組み合わされ「君が薦めてくれた本」となります。
The guy Judy married comes from Australia.
the guy を Judy married が説明しています。married（～と結婚した）の目的語が空所。the guy と組み合わせれば「ジュディが結婚した男の人」。come from …は「～の出身」。
The horror movie you are watching is very scary.
the horror movie を you’re watching が説明。watching の目的語が空所。the horror movie と組み合わされ「君の見ているホラー映画」。
