レッスンのポイント すでに wh 疑問文の基礎は固めました。ここからはちょっと複雑な例に挑戦してみましょう。
Today’s dialog
テスとトニーが駅前の古い彫像について話しています。
Tess: Tony, did you hear the news this morning?
Tony: No, Tess. What news?
Tess: The statue in front of the station fell down.
Tony: What? I love that statue. What do you think was the cause?
Tess: Nobody knows yet. But it was very old.
Tony: Was anybody hurt?
Tess: Luckily, no one was injured. They said it happened in the middle of the night.
Tony: You know, I was taking photographs of that statue just last week. I’m glad I got some photos of it before it fell down.

Nobody knows yet.
主語の Nobody は「誰も～ない」。日本語にはない表現の仕方ですが、よく使われます。 yet は「未完（まだ終わっていない）」ですから、「誰にもわからないよ、まだね」というニュアンス。

この文を理解し使えるようになるためには、「空所・wh 語・疑問形」の３点セットを思い出す必要があります。wh 疑問文で最も大切な「空所」。この文で空所は、think の内容を説明する節の主語の位置にあります。
be 動詞 was の前に何もありません。ここが疑問のターゲット。「何が原因だと思いますか」となります。
少し複雑に思えるかもしれませんが、たいへん基本的な文。いくつか同じタイプの文を練習しましょう。空所がどこにあるのかをしっかり意識しましょう。
What do you think will pass the test?
Which student do you think will win the speech contest?
この形で気をつけてもらいたいのは、リポート文では that を加え I think that …などとすることがありますが、主語を尋ねる疑問文の場合 that を加えることが出来ない、ということ。小さなkポイントですが覚えておきましょう。

空所を意識しながら練習しましょう。
What do you think will happen?
think に後続する節の中で、主語が欠けていることが分かります。ここが空所で疑問のターゲット。
Who do you guess will win the big fight tonight?
guess は「推測する、思う」。think ほどしっかりした思考過程のない、軽い感じの動詞。この動詞に後続する節の主語が空所。「誰が勝つ」となります。ここでの fight は格闘等の試合。
Who do you suggest can help us establish our startup?
suggest は「提案する・（適当な人などを）薦める」。「誰がいいか薦めてくれ」という文内容です。can の主語が空所。

suppose は「(判断の根拠が比較的薄い形で)思う」。fraud は「詐欺, 欺瞞」。
