Lesson 154 文の中の小さな文：節② that 節（リポート文・説明語句の位置）

父親が娘のジェナに、交際相手のブライアンについて尋ねています。
Dad: Jenna, how long have you been dating Brian?
Jenna: Oh, about two years. Why?
Dad: Is he serious about you?
Jenna: He told me that he doesn’t want to lose me.
Dad: Well, that’s good to hear. He has a good job, doesn’t he?
Jenna: Yes, he just got a promotion.
Dad: Hmm. Maybe it’s about time that you two made a decision.
Jenna: You mean, like, about getting married?
Dad: Yes. Your mother and I will be happy if you talk it over with Brian. It might be the right time.

Maybe it’s about time that you two made a decision.
it’s about time that は「～するべき時間・時期だ」。よく使われるフレーズですが、 that 以下で made が使われていることに注意しましょう。仮定法です。仮定法は「事実ではない・可能性が著しく低い」ことを表す形。「（まだやっていないが）やるべきだ」と言っているのです。
It might be the right time.
お父さん、ちょっと厚かましい発言だと思っているようです。may ではなく might（ひょっとして～かもしれない）と可能性の低い形を使っています。

He told me that he doesn’t want to lose me.
この文は told me の後ろに that 節を置いています。説明ルール（説明は後ろに置く）によって、この位置には「told me の説明」という機能が与えられるのです。that 節以降は doesn’t want（現在形）です。話し手は単に彼の言ったことをリポートしているわけではなく、「（今も）失いたくないと思っている」と that 以下が現在の事実であることを強く意識しているのです。
さて that 節のリポート文では that は必須ではありません。ですが気分でつけたりつけなかったりしているわけではないのです。that は相手の興味を「導く」働きを持っていましたね。that が使われるとき話し手は、後続の節の内容に正確に間違いなく相手を導く配慮をしています。
I think (that) she is stupid.
僕は彼女がバカだと思うよ。
この文ではthatは使わない方が普通。正確に相手を導く配慮など必要ない文だからです。
I realize that we have to improve our sales in the second quarter.
上のこの文のように、後ろに続く文が複雑だったり相手に正確に理解してもらうことが重要な文脈ではthatが好まれます。
最後にthat節がbe動詞の後ろ、説明語句の位置に使われたケースを。
The simple fact is that we are overworked and underpaid.
説明語句の位置に置かれれば主語の説明になる、というわけです。

The teacher told me that I could do much better.
told me を that 節で展開するリポート文です。
The coach let me know in no uncertain terms that this was my last chance.
let me know は「知らせてくれる・教えてくれる」。その内容を that 節が示しています。ここに that は必須。let me know とその内容の間に長いフレーズ in no uncertain terms（はっきりと・ストレートに）が入っているからです。that でしっかりと let me know からの流れを橋渡しする意識です。
The problem is that there’s no way I’m going to meet tomorrow’s deadline.
説明語句の位置に that 節が置かれています。there’s no way は「方法がない・できない・ありえない」。何があり得ないのかを I’m going to 以下で展開します。
