How do you celebrate the New Year?

Dialogue

Susu: The end of the year is coming up, Hiroko. How do you celebrate the New Year?

Hiroto: I spend time with my family and visit a nearby shrine. We eat special New year's dishes called osechi. People usually make osechi dishes at home or buy them at a store. You can also order them online.

Susu: Great! What's your favorite osechi dish?

Hiroto: I love Kuri-Kinton. Kuri-kinton is made from sweet potatoes and chestnuts. It is eaten for good luck and wealth in the coming year. How do you celebrate the New Year in your country, Susu?

Susu: In China, we celebrate Chinese New Year. We always have a family reunion and a special dinner on New Year's Eve. We also enjoy watching the lion dance.

Hiroto: Wow, sounds like fun!

Susu: Red is considered to be a lucky color, so New Year's decorations are red. Kids receive red envelopes with money inside.

Hiroto: Oh, we have a similar custom in Japan. We call it otoshidama.
