It’s the day of the surfing competition at Bondi Beach.

 

Announcer: Welcome to the Young Surfers Championship! One of our judges is with me right now – Mr. Scott Wailani!

Scott: Hello, everyone.

Announcer: Many young people are hoping to achieve their dreams today. You’re certainly an inspiration to them.

Scott: I understand how they feel. I’ve surfed since I was a kid. And this was the first competition I participated in.

Announcer: And you won first place, didn’t you?

Scott: Yes. After that, I decided to be a pro surfer. So, this A competition is very meaningful to me.

Announcer: Do you have any message for our contestants?

Scott: Go grab those waves!

 

Scott won first place in the Young Surfers Championship.

The competition is about to start. All of Kota and Briony’s friends are cheering for them.

 

Kota: The day is finally here.

Briony: How are you feeling?

Kota: I’m anxious. This is the most important day of our lives.

Briony: I want to try my special trick. But I’m not sure it’s a good idea.

Kota: Go for it! You practiced so hard. If you don’t try, you won’t succeed!

Briony: Thanks.

Kota: So, we have to get through three rounds before the semifinals?

Briony: That’s right.

Sapna: Briony! Kota! Good luck today!

Nigel: We’re rooting for you! I made some sausage onigiris and cordial. They’ll give you energy.

Kota: Thank you!

Sapna: My boyfriend is so sweet.

Briony & Kota: Boyfriend?!

 

Kota and Briony have to get through three rounds before the semifinals. Nigel said, “We’re rooting for you!”

 

 

Briony has advanced to the semifinals in the girls’ competition. She is going to take her last turn in the round.

 

Announcer: It’s the semifinal round in the junior girls’ competition. Briony McAffee is getting ready to make her last attempt in the round.

Harry: Come on, Briony!

Sapna: Go, Briony!

Announcer: She’s up! She’s got great speed.

Sapna: She’s like a bullet!

Angie: I wish I could move like that!

Announcer: She does a nice snap on the top of the wave. Look at that spray! This young lady has lots of tricks! And she finishes her run. What a graceful display from Ms. McAffee. Now let’s wait for the judges’ scores…. And Briony McAffee gets 9.4 points! She will advance to the finals!

 

Briony got 9.4 points. She will advance to the finals.

 

 

Kota has made it to the boys’ semifinals. He gets ready for his final run.

 

Announcer: It’s the semifinal round! Kikuchi Kota is getting ready for his last run in the round. He needs at least 8.6 points to advance to the finals.

Nigel: I can’t see very well. I wish I had binoculars.

Announcer: And he’s caught the wave! That’s nice form on his bottom turn. Good carving. He’s lost his balance! But he recovers. That was close. He does a nice top turn. And another turn. And another! Three beautiful turns in a row!

Harry: Awesome, Kota!

Announcer: A nice long run from Kikuchi Kota. Now we wait for the judges…. What will Kota’s score be?

 

Kota needs at least 8.6 points to advance to the finals. He did three beautiful turns in a row.

 

Anya : We don’t have a camera.
