Lesson 186 日本とちがうね
Kota and Nigel are walking home from school and talking.
Kota: I watched a teen drama show on TV last night. I saw the main character eat dinner with his girlfriend. He gave her flowers for Valentine’s Day. Is that normal?
Nigel: Of course! Is there something wrong with that?
Kota: In Japan, typically girls give boys chocolate on Valentine’s Day. Then, on White Day, boys give something back to girls.
Nigel: White Day? We only have Valentine’s Day here. Anyone can give something to someone special. What’s up?
Kota: Nothing.
Nigel: Are you trying to decide what to get for Briony?
Kota: Oh, um… I don’t know. Speaking of which, what are you going to get for Sapna?
Nigel: Huh? Oh! Um….
Retelling
There’s no White Day in Australia. Anyone can give something to someone special on Valentine’s Day.
Lesson 187 どんなプレゼントにしよう?
Angie is in the kitchen. Kota enters.
Kota: Hey, Angie, what’s an appropriate gift for Valentine’s Day?
Angie: Oh, well, anything is OK. For example, cards, flowers, or sweets are common.
Kota: Do you and Harry exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day?
Angie: Of course! Actually, I saw him at the mall today. But he didn’t see me. I saw him buying a stuffed animal.
Kota: Oh, that must be your Valentine’s gift.
Angie: Probably. You don’t have to buy anything fancy. Something personal is good.
Kota: Maybe I’ll make homemade chocolate. I can make chocolate with a special shape.
Angie: That’s a great idea! I’m sure Briony will love it!
Kota: No! Uh, I was thinking about making it for… everyone!
Retelling
Kota doesn’t have to buy anything fancy for Valentine’s Day. He’ll make homemade chocolate with a special shape.

Nigel: Hey, Sapna! I’ve been looking for you.
Sapna: Oh?
Nigel: I made this for you. For Valentine’s Day!
Sapna: It’s a photo album!
Nigel: I created it on my computer. I put in lots of pictures of us.
Sapna: A picture of us in the musical! How thoughtful!
Nigel: I’m glad you like it.
Sapna: I have this card for you, too. Here!
Nigel: It’s lovely! There’s a link to a website and a password written in it.
Sapna: You can access a music playlist with it. It’s a collection of my favorite duets. You can practice them. And then we can sing them at karaoke together!

Briony: Oh? What is it? Chocolates! They’re in the shape of surfboards!
Kota: Yeah, I made them for you.
I’m not sure why you’re laughing.
Briony: Because… look! Here’s your present!
Kota: You made chocolates for me, too? And they’re also in the shape of surfboards! What a coincidence!
Briony: I guess our imaginations are similar.
Kota: Oh, and you’ve written my name in Japanese on the surfboards!
Briony: It’s a little messy.
