It’s Christmas Day. Kota and Briony are on the bus to Bondi Beach.

 

Kota: Thanks for inviting me to the beach today, Briony. But what are we doing? We didn’t even bring our surfboards.

Briony: I told you. I want to show you something.

Kota: The weather’s not good. It has been raining all morning.

Briony: No, wait! The rain’s stopping now.

Kota: Perfect timing!

Briony: Here we are. Look!

Kota: Oh, wow! Is that a surfing Santa? And another one. And more. So many surfers are dressed up as Santa! There must be dozens of them.

Briony: It’s a typical Christmas on Bondi Beach!

Kota: It’s so crowded. And there are Christmas trees on the beach! That’s a strange sight for me. But it’s fun!

Briony: I’m glad you like it.

Kota: How long have you been planning this surprise?

Briony: Since I saw your photos of snowy Iwate.

Kota: Oh, I have one more Christmas present for you.

Briony: Oh!

Kota: It’s a happi. It’s a kind of light coat. We sometimes wear them to summer festivals in Japan.

Briony: It’s cute!

Kota: I have one, too. We can wear them to the New Year’s fireworks… if you want to come with us.

Briony: That sounds great!

It’s New Year’s Eve. Kota, the Millers, Briony, and Harry are enjoying the fireworks near the Sydney Opera House.

 

Kota: Wow! Look at the Harbour Bridge! Hundreds of fireworks are falling down to the water.

Angie: It looks like a waterfall!

Briony: It looks like a big wave of light!

Kota: It’s breathtaking.

Harry: I took an awesome picture!

Angie: Let me see it. Look, Kota!

Kota: Great picture! So, there’s another fireworks show later?

Harry: Yes. This is the 9 p.m. family show. The midnight show is even more amazing.

Angie: Mum, Dad, can we stay and watch the midnight show?

Max: Well, tomorrow is a holiday. Why not?

 

Hundreds of fireworks are falling down to the water. Briony thinks it looks like a big wave of light.

 

 

It’s a few minutes before midnight. Everyone is waiting for the fireworks show.

 

Briony: I’ve had a terrific time tonight, Kota.

Kota: Me too, Briony.

Briony: And thank you again for the happi coat. I really like it!

Kota: Don’t mention it. You always help me practice surfing. I’m grateful for your support.

Briony: You’ll be a better surfer than me soon.

Kota: I doubt that!

Angie: You two look adorable in your matching happi coats.

Kota: Happi coats for a happy New Year!

Briony: It’s almost midnight.

ALL: …Three…. Two…. One…. Happy New Year!

Kota & Briony: Happi Happy New Year!
