Lesson 231 発言を正しく位置づける④:発言のリスクを避ける

会社の同僚ジョナスとヤヨイ。オフィスの移転が完了しましたが・・・。

Jonas: Hi, Yayoi. How are you settling in?

Yayoi: Fine, but the water pressure in the restroom is too low. Can we increase the pressure?

Jonas: As far as I am aware, the water pressure can’t be changed. It’s meant to save water.

Yayoi: I see. Do you like this new office?

Jonas: Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but I like it better than the old one.

Yayoi: I have to say it has its good and bad points.

Lesson 232 引いて押せ(日常会話で)

プレゼンを控えたタクマとミランダ。タクマは見当外れのことを考えているようです。

Miranda: OK, I’ve completed my sections for the presentation. How is your writing coming along, Takuma?

Takuma: Um, I haven’t started writing yet.

Miranda: What? We only have two days until our presentation.

Takuma: I have been thinking about the graphics. We need to use brighter colors this time.

Miranda: Right, but there are more important things to consider.

Takuma: I also wanted to include a section on Roman gladiators.

Miranda: That’s interesting, but it’s not exactly connected to our present topic.

Lesson 233 説得する①:議論での「引いて押せ」

市議会議員のエバとダーシーが、交通事故の増加について議論しています。

Darcy: The population of our city is increasing, and we’re having more traffic accidents.

Eva: Why are they happening?

Darcy: There’re not enough space for both cyclists and pedestrians. We need a solution.

Eva: I can see your point, but I think you need to be more specific.

Darcy: We need more bicycle lanes.

Eva: You’re right up to a point, but there’s another issue.

Darcy: What’s that?

Eva: Many roads are already too narrow.

Lesson 234 説得する②:受け入れて主張する

高校生のアメリアとライカーがお世話になったキャンベル先生の送別会を計画しています。

Amelia: Ryker, did you hear that Mr. Campbell is leaving?

Ryker: I can’t believe it. He’s a strict teacher, but I like him.

Amelia: He’s very popular. Let’s organize a farewell party for him.

Ryker: Good idea. We can surprise him by throwing a cake in his face.

Amelia: What?

Ryker: We need to do something he’ll never forget.

Amelia: You have a point, but don’t you think we should do something less drastic?

Ryker: I guess so.
