up は「上」という位置や方向を表す単語です。例えば、コップの中に水が「上」までなみなみと注がれた様子を想像してください。コップは「完全に」いっぱい。そこから up には完全性のニュアンスが生まれます。clean up はただ clean（掃除）するわけではありません。完全に・ピカピカにするのです。
